What is a Lot Size in Forex?
In forex trading, a "lot" is the standard unit of measurement for the volume of a currency you are buying or selling. Because currency price movements (pips) are so small, trading in large quantities is necessary to make meaningful profits—or losses.
The 4 Types of Forex Lots
Brokers typically offer four different lot sizes to accommodate traders with varying account balances:
- Standard Lot (1.00): Represents 100,000 units of the base currency. For USD-quoted pairs, 1 pip equals exactly $10. Standard lots are generally traded by professionals and institutions.
- Mini Lot (0.10): Represents 10,000 units of the base currency. For USD-quoted pairs, 1 pip equals $1. This is a common starting point for intermediate retail traders.
- Micro Lot (0.01): Represents 1,000 units of the base currency. For USD-quoted pairs, 1 pip equals $0.10. This is the recommended starting size for beginners to practice risk management.
- Nano Lot (0.001): Represents 100 units (1 pip = $0.01). Not all brokers offer nano lots, but they are useful for testing strategies with real money with practically zero risk.
Why Lot Size Matters
Your lot size directly dictates your monetary risk per pip. If you trade 1 standard lot (where 1 pip = $10) and your stop loss is 50 pips, you are risking $500 on that trade. If your account balance is only $1,000, that is a massive 50% risk.
Always use a Lot Size Calculator before placing a trade to ensure your volume matches your account's risk parameters.
